At the June 27 Trinity Pride Fest in downtown Fort Worth, Texas, Christian street preachers David Grisham (a retired police officer) and Richard Penkoski were preaching on public property when officers approached attempted to shut them down. A female officer then made a statement that should alarm every American who believes in free speech. She said, “If someone is offended by your talking, then we have a problem.” (wnd.com) She added that she would write a citation if the men’s speech offended attendees.
The Bible Doesn’t Bend to Offense
Scripture never promises that truth will be comfortable. Paul told the Galatians, “Am I therefore become your enemy, because I tell you the truth?” (Galatians 4:16). Jesus Himself warned His followers, “If the world hates you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you” (John 15:18). The Gospel has always offended sinful hearts — that has never made it a crime.
Officers Confirmed the Double Standard
Investigative reporter Sarah Fields documented that when Penkoski (one of the preachers) said calling a biological male a “male” was protected speech, one of the officers confirmed he could still be cited if “someone found it offensive.” Yet when Penkoski said he was offended by half-naked men near children at the same event, the officer replied there was “not much I can do about that.”
The Christian Post reported that Fort Worth PD later admitted the officer’s statements were “not accurate,” ordered First Amendment refresher training, and confirmed sidewalks remain open for speech. Grisham, who once sued the city over this exact issue and won a settlement and apology, was still cited for “unreasonable noise” — a standard officers could not even define.
Stand Up Before Silence Becomes Law
The days are growing darker, and the world’s tolerance for biblical truth is fading fast. Paul warned Timothy that “evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived” (2 Timothy 3:13), yet he still commanded him to “preach the word; be instant in season, out of season” (2 Timothy 4:2). Believers cannot retreat into silence now. Christ said, “Let your light so shine before men” (Matthew 5:16) — not dim it because someone is offended. Start supporting ministries that defend street preaching. Pray for boldness, hold fast to the truth, and refuse to let this precedent stand.
