Are We Serving the God of the Bible — Or a God We Invented?

The God We Invented vs. The God Who Is

The greatest spiritual need in the Church today is not better worship music, bigger buildings, or more relevant sermons. It is the one thing most pulpits refuse to preach — a holy, righteous, and just God who demands reverence and will not be taken lightly.

A recent (Christian Post) article on this subject matter fully agrees. Theologian R.C. Sproul said it plainly before his death — “the greatest spiritual need in people’s lives today is to discover the true identity of God.” He was right. Modern Christianity has reduced God to a heavenly concierge — always available, never demanding, endlessly affirming, and conveniently agreeing with every decision we make. That is not the God of Scripture. The one true God does not adjust Himself to your comfort zone. He calls you out of it.

Isaiah didn’t walk away from his encounter with God inspired — he walked away devastated. “Woe is me, for I am ruined!” he cried (Isaiah 6:5). Why? Because holiness destroys self-deception. As the article rightly declares, holiness does not stand beside God like one trait among many — holiness defines who God is.

Grace Without Holiness Is a Lie

The most dangerous gospel is the comfortable one. Our contemporary rush toward God’s love and his mercy enduring forever with no mention of His holiness forfeits the very grace and mercy we so desperately need. The greatest testimony of God’s compassion is not His affirmation of our waywardness, but His transformation of our lives. Christ was not crucified to wink at sin. He was crucified to destroy it (2 Corinthians 5:21). God loved us enough to do something about our rebellion.

Romans 3:18 states: “There is no fear of God before their eyes.” That verse was written about the lost — but today it describes far too many people who call themselves Christians. This is not a call to shame you. It is a call to rescue us from a powerless faith built on a God who does not exist.

True reverence for a holy God is not just changing your posture — it is redefining your entire relationship with Him into something real, raw, and life-changing. God is not your co-pilot, your life coach, or your personal hype man. He is the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords, the Alpha and the Omega, the One who was and is and is to come — and He will have the last and final word over your life no matter where you stand with him (Psalm 2:4).

The Good News

This same God — holy, consuming, and fearsome — is also the loving Father who loved you enough to send His only Son to rescue you from your sin (John 3:16). He is not waiting to condemn you. He is waiting for you to stop running from Him. Open your Bible. Fall on your knees. And see the God who is ready to meet you where you are.
