A Life Cut Short in 30 Seconds—High School Track Star Fatally Stabbed, Trial Begins

On April 2, 2025, Austin Metcalf — a 17-year-old boy with a 3.97 GPA and a promising future as a student-athlete — attended a high school track meet in Frisco, Texas, and sadly, never came home that day. As reported in the New York Post, when Austin asked Karmelo Anthony to move from his school’s tent, words were exchanged and Anthony reached into his bag and said, “Touch me and see what happens,” then stabbed Austin in the chest one time. (nypost.com) The entire confrontation lasted under 30 seconds. Austin died in the arms of his twin brother, Hunter. 

His Last Words Were About God

Less than 48 hours before the stabbing, Austin posted on X: “Faith that God’s got me and my work will pay off.” That post has since been viewed 2.5 million times. A teenager, anchored in God, pouring himself into his dreams — and a senseless, evil decision extinguished it all. How sad for Austin and Anthony as well. Their lives as they knew them ended abruptly because of pride, arrogance, and anger. Proof that Satan is real.

1 Peter 5:8 says, “Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.” Satan doesn’t tell you when he’s going to attack; he is the master strategist in destruction and he’s not in a hurry to attack. Yes, Austin professed his faith but failed to walk away when he was under fire. Romans 12:21 teaches us, “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.”

A Father’s Grief — and His Grace

Austin’s father Jeff Metcalf refused to let rage define his son’s legacy: “This is a human being thing. This person made a bad choice and it affected both his family and my family forever.” Prosecutors told jurors that Anthony “buried a knife into the heart of another young man, causing his death, and then ran away.” But in the spiritual realm, they both failed to submit themselves to a Holy God in that very moment so they could both overcome evil with good. Can you imagine if at that very moment they looked at each other and said, “Man, this is stupid” and turned the other cheek? What a tragedy.

The trial is still ongoing but the suffering will never end for both families. Anthony will have to live with his 30-second decision for the rest of his life and sadly much of it will be spent in prison.
