ESPN Anchor’s Reaction to Perversion Isn’t the Real Story — Our Silence Is

Why Christians must stop withholding moral clarity in public culture

In the first hours of 2026, veteran ESPN anchor Scott Van Pelt went viral not because he promoted cultural orthodoxy, but because he reacted with natural shock when a New Year’s broadcast cut to two men kissing on national television. The moment was brief, unscripted, and very uncomfortable. As you might imagine, it spread quickly online, with influencers on both sides weighing in on his clear (yet mild) objection. Those on the left tried to soft-peddle it for the woke ESPN, and those on the right openly celebrated it as a rare example of clear and appropriate disgust.

Scott Van Pelt did not lecture, and he did not editorialize. He simply paused, guffawed with discomfort, and pivoted back to doing his job.

That reaction matters because it revealed what many Americans experience privately but are no longer honest enough to express publicly. Instinctive moral discomfort has been reclassified as unacceptable in the public arena. Suppressing that response has become an expectation, particularly within media environments that treat all sexual expression as morally interchangeable.

This was not a controversy manufactured by outrage culture. It was a moment where human instinct collided with an industry that insists nothing is inappropriate, even when broadcast to millions, including children.

How Public Tolerance Became Public Promotion

Over the last thirty years, Christians were urged to soften language and retreat from moral judgment. The promise was social peace, but the result was moral decay.

As private behavior moved into public view, public view shifted to quiet affirmation. Affirmation then hardened into expectation and moral objection is now treated as hostility.

We must recognize that children are not neutral observers. They absorb what adults present as normal. When sexual behavior is displayed publicly and framed as virtuous or in any way acceptable, children do not contextualize it. They internalize it. Simply put, sexualized public behavior reshapes moral boundaries when adults refuse to draw them.

After 30 years of appeasement, silent acceptance from believers has not in any way reduced cultural tension. Instead, it has surrendered moral high ground. This trend must end.

Compassion Requires Truth, Not Denial

Christians are commanded to love sinners, so we do exactly that, and this includes every person entangled in sexual sin, without exception. But love does not require approval or acceptance of behavior, and love does not require dishonesty.

Refusing to name sin does not free people from it. Withholding truth does not protect the vulnerable. Moral confusion does not produce spiritual healing.

The role of the Church has never been cultural affirmation. It has been obedience to God and faithfulness to His written Word, period.

What Scripture Says About Homosexual Acts

Scripture speaks directly and consistently on this issue. These passages define behavior, not personal worth, and they describe God’s moral order without apology.

“You shall not lie with a male as with a woman; it is an abomination.” (Leviticus 18:22)

“If a man lies with a male as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination.” (Leviticus 20:13)

“For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions… men committing shameless acts with men.” (Romans 1:26–27)

“Do not be deceived… men who practice homosexuality… will not inherit the kingdom of God.” (1 Corinthians 6:9–10)

And as evidence of the hope that springs from love, that same passage continues with redemption:

“And such were some of you. But you were washed… sanctified… justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.” (1 Corinthians 6:11)

Scripture clearly condemns sin and offers deliverance from it. Both are present, and neither can be removed without distorting the Gospel.

Speaking Plainly Again

Public sexual behavior does not become righteous because it is televised. Sin does not transform into virtue through repetition or applause. Cultural pressure does not alter God’s standards.

Christians do not need permission from media executives, activists, or political movements to speak truth. The longer moral clarity is withheld, the more aggressively confusion spreads, particularly among children. Faithfulness requires speech, and as we’ve learned, silence has consequences. Let’s redeem the 21st century in 2026, Church!“Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them.” (Ephesians 5:11)
