The Truth: Gaza Never Belonged to the Palestinians

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has announced that Palestinians in Gaza will be “allowed to leave” the territory. Critics, both in the Arab world and in Western capitals, have pounced—calling it forced displacement, a “new Nakba,” and even ethnic cleansing. Here’s the legal truth.

Even before we discuss their legal right, it’s crucial to understand that, Biblically, Gaza belongs to Israel. God gave the land of Canaan—including the Gaza Strip—to Abraham’s descendants as an everlasting covenant. “On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying, ‘To your offspring I give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphrates…’ (Genesis 15:18–21).

That covenant isn’t up for renegotiation by the UN, the ICC, or any political coalition. The prophets warned that the nations would trample God’s boundaries: “For behold, in those days and at that time… I will enter into judgment with them there, on behalf of my people and my heritage Israel, because they have scattered them among the nations and have divided up my land.” (Joel 3:1–2).

Legally, Israel has every right to take it back. In 2005, Israel pulled out of Gaza under the “disengagement plan,” handing governance to the Palestinians under one basic condition: live in peace as good neighbors. Hamas shredded that deal—seizing control, turning Gaza into a terror launchpad, and culminating in the October 7 massacre. When a neighbor torches your house, murders your family, and vows to do it again, you don’t hand them the keys back—you lock them out for good. “So you shall purge the evil from your midst.” (Deuteronomy 19:19).

Rebutting the “Ethnic Cleansing” Lie

In reality, Netanyahu’s proposal doesn’t force Palestinians out—it offers those who want to leave a way to escape the war Hamas started and keeps fueling. Civilians are endangered because Hamas embeds within neighborhoods, stashes weapons under homes, and fires rockets from streets and hospitals. The same voices screaming “ethnic cleansing” were silent while Hamas executed rivals, tortured dissenters, and looted its own people.

This isn’t about ethnicity; it’s about dismantling a terror regime and restoring order in land that is Israel’s by divine decree and broken treaty. “You shall take possession of the land and settle in it, for I have given the land to you to possess it.” (Numbers 33:53).

God draws Israel’s borders, and no court can erase His map. The covenant to Abraham stands, and God’s promises are not revoked. “For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable.” (Romans 11:26-29).
