In today’s culture, conversations about modesty often center on personal expression and societal norms. However, for Christian women, modesty is ultimately about honoring God. As a recent article in The Gospel Coalition explains, “To the child of God, the outfit choices on the rack are not without limits” (Stuckey, 2024). This means clothing decisions should reflect biblical principles rather than cultural trends.
Honoring God with Our Bodies
The Bible reminds us, “You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body” (1 Cor. 6:19–20, ESV). Stuckey emphasizes that our bodies belong to God, and our clothing should reflect this reality. Modesty is not about suppressing femininity but about dressing in a way that aligns with our faith. Ultimately, it’s about obeying the Word of God.
Embracing Biblical Femininity
God created both men and women in His image, each with unique distinctions. As Stuckey states, “We are not merely people in general; we are women.” She further explains that our clothing should not blur these distinctions, adding, “Whatever we select, our clothes should not aim at androgyny.” For me personally, as a journalist, wife, mother, and child of God, I’ll add that a Christian woman should also avoid clothing that is tight, revealing, or exposes body parts in a way that may cause others to stumble. Scripture calls believers to pursue holiness in all aspects of life, including appearance, as “women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control” (1 Timothy 2:9, ESV). Dressing modestly not only protects her dignity but also ensures that her outward appearance aligns with the purity and honor God desires for His daughters. Modesty, then, is about embracing God’s design rather than conforming to worldly standards.
A Heart Issue, Not Just a Wardrobe Issue
While clothing is a visible expression of modesty, the heart behind it matters most. Stuckey argues that the real issue is not just what we wear, but “what kind of people God is making us to be.” True modesty reflects a transformed heart, not just a curated wardrobe.
Teaching the Next Generation
Discipling young women in biblical modesty is essential. Stuckey notes that “standing at the rack of shorts and swimsuits provides an opportunity for discipleship.” Through these discussions, young women can learn to see their clothing choices as an extension of their faith. It also reveals how they see themselves in Christ.
Ultimately, modesty is not about legalism, rules, or regulations. It’s about glorifying God in every aspect of our lives, including how we present ourselves. As Christian women, our clothing should reflect our identity in Christ rather than conforming to cultural trends. Jesus Himself reminds us of our higher calling: “Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven” (Matthew 5:16, ESV). When we dress with wisdom and humility, we reflect His light, pointing others to the beauty of a heart devoted to God.
