In an opinion piece in today’s Politico, Mathias Döpfner—CEO of POLITICO’s parent company—lays out what most world leaders still refuse to admit. Israel’s strike on Iran wasn’t about escalation. It was about restraint finally giving way to survival.
“According to official state doctrine, the primary goal of the mullahs in Tehran is the annihilation of the State of Israel.”
This isn’t abstract language. It’s the regime’s formal position—agreed upon, codified, and unapologetically repeated.
Döpfner doesn’t speculate—he names it:
“In Iran, women are systematically oppressed and abused. Homosexuals are murdered. Those who think differently are imprisoned and tortured. In Tehran, the cynical abuse of the civilian population in Gaza as human shields is also cold-bloodedly conceived and financed.”
This is evil in full view of the world. And Israel isn’t fighting shadows—it’s confronting a regime that proudly broadcasts its brutality.
“In a world full of bad actors, Iran is the most aggressive and dangerous totalitarian force of our time.”
Döpfner’s words are backed by decades of evidence: international terror sponsorship, crackdowns on civil dissent, regional destabilization, and the theological glorification of martyrdom and conquest. Israel’s strike is a response to a doctrine—not just a drone or a missile.
“Once Israel falls, Europe and America will be the focus.”
Iran’s leaders do not hide their strategy. Israel is not the end of their vision—it’s the beginning. Their long-term goal is to see liberty dismantled, speech silenced, and Christian and Jewish influence erased from every continent.
That’s why Döpfner calls Israel “a beacon of freedom in a sea of tyranny.” It’s not political flattery. It’s the plain truth. As Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu puts it, “We’re fighting from an island in a sea of evil.” Indeed they are.
“They have said, ‘Come, let us wipe them out as a nation; let the name of Israel be remembered no more!’” (Psalm 83:4)
This is spiritual war cloaked in geopolitics. The same ancient hatred that drove nations against Israel in the psalms is alive today—in the manifestos of Iran’s rulers and in the rockets flying toward civilian homes.
This moment is serious—but it is not final. Iran’s doctrine may be wicked, but it isn’t sovereign. The defense of Israel does not ultimately rest on the IDF or the Knesset. It rests on the covenant promises of Almighty God.
“He who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.” (Psalm 121:4)
That is the assurance of Scripture. God watches over Israel—not because of its perfection, but because of His promise. The world may trade alliances, but the Lord doesn’t shift. He has declared that Israel will endure, and no regime—not even one soaked in terror and deception—will stop Him.
The West can delay, but the Church cannot. This is the time to stand with Israel for the sake of all. This is the time to speak up for God’s chosen. And this is the time to intercede for the peace of Jerusalem. But fear not. The God of Israel—our God—does not sleep or slumber.
