Beyond Dopamine: The Real Cure for Our Kids’ “Addictions”

Extended gaming and endless scrolling are still a serious problem—they waste potential, dull the mind, and can corrode a young person’s spiritual life. But the science doesn’t support the idea that these habits trigger the same kind of dopamine overload caused by cocaine or meth. As the article points out, the dopamine theory has become a convenient talking point for educators and parents who would rather point to brain chemistry than address the deeper causes of unhealthy behavior.

The Real Issue

And the real issue isn’t chemistry—it’s the heart.
Our kids aren’t starving for a “dopamine reset.” They’re starving for the gospel. American families have traded God’s design for the quick-fix psychology of the age. We’ve replaced discipling our children in the Word with trying to manage their “behavioral health” through whatever parenting tip happens to be trending on morning TV.

Scripture doesn’t tell us to “detox from dopamine.” It calls us to walk in the Spirit so we “will not gratify the desires of the flesh” (Galatians 5:16). And walking in the Spirit’s twin command is to “put to death” the works of the flesh (Romans 8:13). That’s not a neurological hack—it’s a supernatural transformation that only comes through the new birth in Christ.

What’s Missing in the Home

Parents, our calling isn’t to panic over every tech trend. It’s to live out the born-again life at home, training our kids to crucify sinful impulses and to find their joy, purpose, and identity in Jesus—not in the next scroll, level-up, or binge. Technology can’t damn your kids, but sin can—and only the Spirit can set them free.“If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit.” (Galatians 5:25)
