A Tectonic Wake-Up Call: When the Earth Shakes, Are We Listening?

Two major earthquakes rocked the globe this week—one striking Myanmar at magnitude 7.7, the other shaking Thailand with a 6.4 aftershock. And yet, as the dust settles and headlines fade, most of the world shrugs and scrolls on with a “better them than me” mentality.

But believers shouldn’t.

Earthquakes have always rattled the human soul, not just the ground beneath our feet—and they should—because they’re more than mere geological events. According to Jesus, they’re prophetic markers. Luke 21:11 makes it plain: “There will be great earthquakes, famines, and pestilences in various places.” They’re not the end, but they point to it.

And no, earthquakes aren’t part of some divine doomsday alarm. They’re a divine call to urgency—right now. Let’s take a moment to consider what that means.

Over the past 100 years, seismic activity has steadily increased—not just because of better sensors, as atheists will claim, but because the earth itself is groaning. In 1920, the number of recorded earthquakes over magnitude 6 hovered around 30 per year. Today, we often see over 150. Something’s shifting—not just in the plates below, but in the spiritual climate above.

Still, too many Christians are waiting for a convenient “cluster” of signs—a big, cinematic surge of earthquakes to prove the end is near. But Jesus warned that His return wouldn’t follow a script. He said He would come “like a thief in the night” (1 Thess. 5:2). That means no build-up. No countdown clock. No chance to suddenly “get serious.” If you’re not truly ready for His return as He instructs, you risk hearing Him say, “I do not know you,” when that apocalyptic night arrives (Matthew 25:12).

Just like an earthquake, His return will destroy everything not of Him—and there will be no warning.

So the question isn’t whether these earthquakes mean He’s returning soon. We already know that. The question is: Are you living like it could be tonight?

This is no time for convenient cultural Christianity. This is no time to kick back, blend in, or play lukewarm spiritual games. Earthquakes, wars, pandemics—these are signs of a world unraveling, and every one of them is a divine nudge: Get your house in order—today.

If you’re waiting for an obvious chain reaction of biblical signs before you believe Jesus is coming, you’re already asleep at the wheel. The shaking has already begun—not just in the earth, but in the body of Christ.

We all need to live like the sky could split before morning—because it just might.
