A Marine’s Life Taken at a Facebook Marketplace Meetup

Columbia, MO — In what should have been a routine online sale, a U.S. veteran, missionary and servant of God lost his life in a horrifying act of violence, underscoring the grave dangers of complacency in real-life interactions that begin on social media.

A Deadly Meetup Gone Wrong

According to The Christian Post, “Michael Ryan Burke, 42, was shot at his home” after agreeing to meet potential buyers through Facebook Marketplace. (Christian Post) Burke, a U.S. Marine veteran and humanitarian who served in Uganda, Haiti and Iraq, welcomed what he believed were genuine buyers for his iPhone—only to be ambushed in a planned robbery.

Authorities have arrested four suspects, including three 18-year-olds and one juvenile, all now facing second-degree murder, first-degree robbery and burglary charges in connection with the killing. The same report reveals that Burke miraculously called 911 after being shot and later sent a final text to his mother and sister saying, “Hey, I’m dying and I love you.”

A Warning, Not Just a Headline

This tragedy is more than a headline—it is a warning. In a world where digital connections have become the norm and often replace face-to-face interaction, discernment is no longer optional. Scripture warns us in Proverbs 22:3, “The prudent sees danger and hides himself, but the simple go on and suffer for it.” If that means anything in 2026, it is that we must apply both spiritual and practical wisdom when engaging with strangers, especially when personal safety is at stake.

Practical Wisdom Saves Lives

Practical discernment matters: conduct meetups in public, well-lit places; invite a friend or family member to be present; and when in doubt, walk away. Convenience is never worth a life.

A Call to Action

This tragedy demands more than sympathy—it demands action. It is a sobering reminder that the enemy “prowls around like a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour” (1 Peter 5:8). God’s people must stop being casual with safety, stop assuming everyone has good intentions, and take responsibility for protecting themselves and those they love. Discernment is a gift from God, and ignoring it can be deadly, as this story painfully reveals.

May we honor the life of Michael Burke by refusing complacency and walking in God-given wisdom. May God comfort his family, cover them in peace and carry them through this unimaginable loss.
