Monday, May 11, 2026 — Seventeen American cruise passengers are expected to return to the United States today after spending weeks aboard the M/V Hondius, the cruise ship now at the center of a deadly hantavirus outbreak. At least one U.S. passenger has tested “mildly positive” for the Andes strain of hantavirus, while another American is showing symptoms, according to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (The Gateway Pundit). Both are being transported in biocontainment units for evaluation in Nebraska.
What Is Hantavirus — And Why Should We Care?
Hantavirus is a potentially fatal illness originating from infected rodents, transmitted through contact with their urine, droppings, or saliva. Symptoms include fever, severe fatigue, muscle aches, and rapidly progressing respiratory failure. The Andes strain is especially alarming because, unlike most hantavirus variants, it can spread between humans through close contact. The outbreak aboard the M/V Hondius has produced six confirmed cases and three deaths — including a Dutch couple and a German national.
The Truth They Owe Us
The CDC insists the public risk remains “extremely low” — but Americans have been down this road before. After COVID, blind trust in public health officials is no longer an option. We deserve full transparency from the moment a threat appears, not after lives are lost. Proverbs 29:2 declares, “When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice — but when the wicked rule, the people groan.” Isaiah 56:10 goes further, calling out leaders who fail their post — “His watchmen are blind, they are all without knowledge.” Corrupt leadership and willful ignorance are equally dangerous — and both cost lives. We refuse to be governed by either. The Trump administration has made significant progress in raising these standards, but we must demand more of them, as we still have a long way to go.
Wisdom Is Your Greatest Weapon Of Defense
Do not fear — fear is not your portion. Get educated, stay informed, and seek God for wisdom. James 1:5 promises, “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given to him.” God is not the author of confusion — He is the source of every answer. Amen.
