Tragedy in Kentucky: When Storms Don’t Spare the Righteous

In the early hours of May 18, 2025, a series of devastating tornadoes swept through Kentucky, leaving a trail of destruction and heartache. Laurel County bore the brunt, with at least 19 confirmed fatalities, including Major Roger Leslie Leatherman, a 39-year veteran of the fire department who died shielding his wife during the storm, as reported by AP News. His courage will not be forgotten, as neighbors recall his final act of sacrifice, laying down his life to save another.

In London, Kentucky, residents like Jeff Wyatt recounted harrowing escapes. Wyatt, his wife, and two children narrowly survived as their home was torn apart, managing to find shelter in a hallway moments before the roof and family room were ripped away.

Ashley Taylor, a city worker in London, Kentucky, survived the storm by sheltering with nine others and three dogs in a neighbor’s crawl space. She expressed gratitude, stating, “We prayed like never before — and just thankful for everything God did for us.”

Reed Sheppard, a native of London and guard for the Houston Rockets, returned home to assist with cleanup efforts. With tears in his eyes, he shoveled debris from a neighbor’s home and handed out food to survivors. “This is my home,” he said. “These are my people. I can’t just sit back and do nothing.”

But why do such tragedies befall the innocent? Why are the righteous not spared from nature’s fury?

Jesus offered perspective when He said,

“…He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.” (Matthew 5:45

Natural disasters do not discriminate; they are part of God’s divine order, affecting all in their path. But we can still find beauty in the ashes…

Maybe the Wyatt family will find a deeper appreciation for one another and greater gratitude for God’s mercy, especially when seeing other families suffering far greater than themselves, regardless of their degree of “goodness” in God’s sight.

Maybe Reed Sheppard will soon start a ministry that leverages his fame and wealth to rescue more folks like the ones he’s helping now — as surely more storms are on their way.

Maybe Major Roger Leslie Leatherman has inspired thousands to act with equal heroism when they hear the call, as surely he will be remembered well into history for his selfless act of sacrifice to save his wife. Jesus said it best:

“Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” (John 15:13)

As Kentucky begins the arduous journey of rebuilding, let’s remember to always look to the Bible for guidance and comfort. Through God’s word we’re reminded that devastation can bring renewal, and sorrow can spark a deeper faith and sense of purpose in Christ.
