Faith in the Exam Room: Just Two Schools Heal with Christ

In a nation overflowing with medical schools, 150 and growing, only a handful train doctors who see patients not as problems to fix—but as souls to care for. That’s why the work of Loma Linda University (Loma Linda, California) and Belmont University’s newly established College of Medicine (Nashville, Tennessee) matters more than ever.

Evangelical medical schools that offer MD degrees are exceedingly rare—and becoming rarer. In fact, Belmont’s is the only new evangelical MD-granting school to open in the last 50 years. Think about that. In half a century of secular expansion and biotech boom, only one new Christian institution has stepped into the medical field to proclaim that healing and holiness belong together.

And despite what many assume, some familiar names are not part of the faithful remnant. As Christianity Today reports, “Baylor College of Medicine disaffiliated from Baylor University in 1969 and shed its Christian mission. Oral Roberts University opened a medical school and hospital in 1981 but closed both in 1990 under the weight of millions in debt.” The field is not crowded—it is nearly empty.

That’s what makes these two schools worth our prayers, our dollars, and our full-throated support. They are preparing physicians who see the human body as fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14)—not just as tissue and data. And they’re doing so in the name of the Great Physician.

When Jesus sent out His followers, He said, “Heal the sick…and say to them, ‘The kingdom of God has come near to you.’” (Luke 10:9). In other words, healing was never secondary to the gospel—it was part of the gospel.

At Red Sky, we often warn of decay in culture and compromise in the Church. But today, we highlight something else: a holy remnant standing firm and rising in the heart of medicine. These schools aren’t just good—they are critical. If we don’t support them, we may lose the last places in America where a medical degree still comes with a biblical spine.
