Dogs are often called “man’s best friend,” but as Christians, we might say they’re a gift from God, wrapped in fur and always available for you. From the Bible’s mention of creation to the way dogs bring joy into our homes, these loyal companions serve as both a reminder of God’s love and a source of unlimited fun.
In the opening chapters of Genesis, we see that God created the heavens and the earth, and filled it with creatures of all kinds. While the Bible doesn’t specifically mention dogs, it’s easy to imagine that, had they been around, God would’ve delighted in creating them too. After all, what other creature can simultaneously greet you with all the enthusiasm, and also protect you from potential threats?
I’ve always loved animals, and I volunteered for the ASPCA in New York while I was in high school. Personally I’ve always wanted a dog but never felt ready. If you get anything from this article, let it be this: you’ll never feel ready for the responsibility – this is when you activate your FAITH & PRAY. I was also blessed with a pastor that has a kind and generous heart who encouraged me when I felt overwhelmed. Dogs are highly trainable but they might not be able to recite Scripture, but they have a unique ability to teach us profound lessons about love, loyalty, and joy. Ever notice how a dog doesn’t hesitate to love you, even when you’re having a rough day? They don’t judge you by your actions or your mood swings; they just sit by your side, offering comfort in the purest form. Imagine if us humans did that for one another?
In a way, dogs mirror the unconditional love God has for us. We might drift, make mistakes, or lose our way, but just like our faithful dogs, God’s love is unwavering. Proverbs 12:10, it says, “The righteous care for the needs of their animals,” showing that God values the care and compassion we show to His creatures. Whether you’re taking your dog for a walk or giving them an extra treat, these small acts of kindness reflect God’s care for all creation.
And let’s not forget the child-like joy dogs bring to our lives! From the crazy zoomies to their protective habit of barking at a squirrel, they’re a constant source of excitement. Have you ever watched your dog get excited over a toy that they played with for months? They are simply experiencing pure joy in the simplest of things. To me it’s a reminder that we should do the same, be happy with less.
In closing, dogs remind us to live in the moment, to love without conditions, and to find joy in the little things. So, the next time your dog curls up next to you, remember that in their simple companionship, they offer us a glimpse of God’s love and grace. Now get off your device and play with your dog!
AMEN
